Hobby Turns Into Thriving Business

What started out as a hobby for Jenny Schumacher morphed into Jenny’s Greenhouse, a thriving retail and wholesale business north of Zumbro Falls. When Schumacher started her venture she had a small building and one greenhouse. But each year thereafter additions were made and now eight greenhouses are grouped together to house the many flowers and plants, while trees, shrubs and outdoor décor spill onto the parking lot and green space beyond. “It began as a hobby,” she said. “I was looking for a way to stay home with the kids and work out of my home.” Their two boys, now eight and 10 years old, assist in the greenhouse, often helping customers carry boxes to their cars. They also like planting seeds, stated Schumacher, “and watching them come up.” Prior to … [Read more...]

Field of Flags 2012

Submitted by Linda Lemmerman The Field Of Flags will be up and running again this year during Mazeppa Daze. The Mazeppa Veterans Honor Guard sponsors this patriotic program. Flags can be dedicated in someone’s memory, or in honor of that person (it doesn’t have to be military to donate a flag). We are asking a donation of $10.00 for each flag. Last year 317 flags were donated in memory or in honor of others. Of those, 79 were not veteran-related. The individual’s name, which is printed on a small business size card, is attached to the flag. On the back of the card, names of those dedicating the flag are listed. During the Field of Honor ceremony these names are announced. This year the Field of Honor will be held the evening of July 12. As names are announced, … [Read more...]
Corn Planting Progresses

Corn planting is well under way in the area and with the early spring, most farmers appear to be well ahead of schedule. We too are planting, and even though there are days when the progress seems slow, we are making headway. We got our field of corn across the Zumbro River planted last week and from all the rain we’ve had this week, it seems like it was none too soon. The only way to get to the field is to cross the river by tractor when the water level is low. It takes two of us to get the field planted. One of us has to drive the tractor and planter across the river, while the other brings the seed corn and the bagged fertilizer across in the bucket of our bulldozer. We have to use bagged fertilizer because if we took the fertilizer wagon across the water would get into … [Read more...]

WABASHA, MINNESOTA — The Wabasha County Government Study Commission is making steady progress in its fact-finding inquiry about forms of county government. 4-H Volunteers are the Backbone of the 4-H Youth Development Program
What does 4-H mean to me? It’s more than a green four-leaf clover and competitions in various projects. 4-H is a unique mixture of experiences not found anywhere else. For me, 4-H is an opportunity to learn, grow, and volunteer. Yet it is the opportunities to learn life skills and give back to others that are the most memorable. 4-Hers in Wabasha County are engaged in a variety of activities that nurture their ability to think, create, organize, serve, lead, succeed, and fail. Whether it’s learning about a project area, competing in a judging contest, traveling to another state, or touring Washington DC, our members are becoming responsible citizens of tomorrow through their accomplishments today. Youth would never have experienced these amazing opportunities, however, … [Read more...]
Mazeppa Business Changes Hands

For Sue Vagt and her daughter Brenda Heimberg it’s been a dream come true. The mother/daughter team recently purchased the used clothing boutique in Mazeppa and named it The Walk-In Closet. “It’s always been a dream,” said Sue, to which Heimberg piped in and said, “We have talked about owning a thrift store, wished the opportunity would come up and it did.” Vagt and Heimberg purchased the store, which was called Nothin’ New, from Ina Brown, and after making some slight changes, they reopened it under the new name the first of March. “Ina made it very easy to get into,” said Heimberg. “She was just an angel.” And although they are both delighted with the arrangement and recent opening, Heimberg added some humor to the quick turn of events, “We jumped … [Read more...]
