OIL SURFACING IN PROGRESS ON T.H. 60 TO ZUMBRO FALLS
Oil surfacing was started this week on Highway 60 from Mazeppa to Zumbro Falls.
A sealer coat is in the process of application and a heavier coating will follow. Upon completion, the new graded highway will compare with any in the state.
For the past month, several coats of gravel have been applied and at the present, the last phase of the work is in progress.

Consolidation News
Mazeppa’s consolidation program which had a temporary setback last week through a challenged legal technicality is on the move again with a new plat being drawn.
The legal technicality arose when the farm of Lenus Miller was set out of District 73 during the time the original plat was being considered by the State Department of Education. This move was done last summer and the fact was overlooked when this plat was approved.
At the present, the new plat is being drawn by Mrs. Verma Olin, county superintendent of schools and is expected to be completed sometime next week. This plat will be the same as the original with the exception of the one farm which had been set into another area.
Obituaries
MRS. WILLIAM HOFSCHULTE
Mrs. William Hofschulte, a long-time Mazeppa resident, died Sunday at her home following an illness of about five years, she was 78 years old.
The former Susanna Weber was born in Bellechester May 3, 1877. On Nov. 22, 1899, she was married to Mr. Hofschulte at Bellechester. They farmed at Harvey, N.D. several years before moving to Mazeppa 45 years ago. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1949.
Surviving are her husband; two sons William and Matt Hofschulte of Rochester; five daughters, Mrs. Edwin Williams, Mrs. Tom Campbell, Mrs. Ted Rosener and Mrs. Henry Smith, all of Rochester, and Mrs. Orville Johnson of Sargeant; three sisters, Mrs. Anna Hofschulte of Hammond, Mrs. Mike Conrad and Mrs. Catherine Schmitt of Harvey, N.D.; 24 grandchildren. One daughter preceded her in death.
Pallbearers were Richard Schmitt, Richard Hofschulte, Conrad Hofschulte, Johnny Hofschulte, George Hofschulte and George Majerus.
Mrs. Hofschulte was a kind and friendly person, beloved by all who knew her.
DAVID EDWARD WHALEY
David Edward Whaley, longtime Mazeppa area resident, passed away at 3:30 a.m. Wednesday at Zumbrota Community hospital, at the age of 84. He was taken to the hospital Tuesday.
Mr. Whaley, who was born Feb. 14, 1871, is survived by his sister, Mrs. Josephine Jerry, with whom he made his home on a farm near Mazeppa for 73 years.
Pallbearers named are John Gruhlke, Wm. Gruhlke, John Frank, George Oelkers, Laverne Windhorst and Earl Lemar.
Mr. Whaley will be missed by the entire community as he was well-known in this area, and his family is offered the deepest sympathy.
BUSY 54’S RECEIVE FLAG FROM VFW AUXILIARY
October 11, the Busy 54’s 4-H club held the monthly meeting at School Dist. 76. President JC Pfeiffer called the meeting to order. Patsy Tupper read the minutes of the last meeting.
Our leader, Daisy Pfeiffer, presented an American flag to our club in behalf of VFW auxiliary, Post 1802.
There was no old business. For new business we elected Delvin Tupper for our new song leader. We changed the name of our club to “The South Mazeppa Willing Workers.” Curtis Larson got a prize for entering the name.
At this meeting we had our Hallowe’en party. Clayton Pfeiffer and Mrs. John Reiland won prizes for the grownups’ costumes. Delores Sommerfield and Nancy Radke won the prizes for the girls and JC Pfeiffer and Curtis Larson for the boys.
Congratulations
To Bellechester upon its recent incorporation as a village. A lively interest is being demonstrated in the first election to be held next Thursday. May it always be thus!
