ZUMBROTA, Minn. - Minnesota State House candidate Michael “Hutch” Hutchinson will
run for office in District 20b as an independent. Hutch, who was the district's DFL candidate in 2024, cited
a combination of constituent concerns and issues with the direction of the Democratic party in
Washington, D.C. as reasons for the decision.
"During his 1796 farewell address, George Washington warned us about the dangers of dividing politics
into parties," Hutch said. "In his words, 'they are likely in the course of time and things, to become potent
engines, by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the
people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government, destroying afterwards the very engines
which have lifted them to unjust dominion.'
In an age where the 'cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled' among the ultra-rich have exploited our
government to hoard their money and interests while eroding people's faith in the institutions meant to
serve us all, Washington's words have never rung truer."
Driven by a belief that government should represent its people and reflect their will, and not answer solely
to those with unfettered access to money and power, Hutch looks forward to serving the people of District
20B and the State of Minnesota without having to worry about also serving a political party and billionaire
mega-donors.
"I believe that by running as an independent, I am making it clear that when elected, I will honor my duty
to serve all my constituents, and make a priority of building a better district, state, and country for
everyone," Hutch said.
